A mid-century novelty ceramic figure of Japanese origin, depicting a stylised donkey pulling a cart in the form of a whiskey barrel. The piece is crafted from redware and finished in a high-gloss chocolate brown glaze. The barrel features moulded relief wood-grain texturing with contrasting golden-yellow accents applied to the barrel bands and the spoked wheel. The donkey is rendered with simplified features, including hand-painted black eyes and a red harness detail. While often utilised as a decorative planter, this specific form was originally designed as a novelty whiskey decanter. Based on visual consensus and style, this item dates to the mid-20th century export period. Height: approximately 15 cm.
Condition report:
The piece is in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of restoration. There is minor surface wear consistent with age and light shelf wear to the base. The original stopper for the barrel is missing.
